DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore
Risa Yamada scored twice, including the eventual game-winner in the 21st minute, while
Leslie Fregoso added a pair of assists on Sunday afternoon, lifting the UC Davis women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout of previously conference unbeaten Cal Poly in a Big West Conference match-up at Aggie Soccer Field.
The Aggies posted their sixth win in the last seven matches, improving to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Mustangs, who were held to just four shots on goal, fell to 7-6 overall and suffered their first conference defeat, falling to 3-1.
Yamada tallied her second brace in the last three contests, putting UC Davis in front with her fourth goal of the year in the 21st minute.
Sammie Ruelas started the sequence with a long throw-in that was headed back by
Leslie Fregoso and flicked on by
Emma Hasco to Yamada at the top of the 18, who banged it home to the top center of the cage for the 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until the 77th minute as Yamada gave the Aggies some breathing room, converting off a rebound of a shot by Fregoso that clipped a Cal Poly defender, one-timing it to the left side of the net for the final score.
Yamada's five goals now lead the team, while her 13 points are second on the squad. Fregoso's two assists were her fifth and sixth of the year, good for tops on the team and giving her a team-high 14 points on the year. Hasco's helper was her third of the season.
UC Davis out-shot Cal Poly by a 17-10 count, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, while collecting five corner kicks on the day. Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki made four saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
The Aggies return to the road for a pair of conference contests next week, traveling to Cal State Fullerton on Thursday (Oct. 7) and UC Riverside on Sunday (Oct. 10). Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respective, at those sites.
