DAVIS, Calif. — Sophomore
Demari Webb slammed a team-high 19 kills and hit .371 on the night, while
Josephine Ough hit .583 to help lead the UC Davis offense, as the Aggies posted their second consecutive sweep, 25-14, 25-13, 26-24, over San Francisco to close out day one at the 2021 Aggie Invitational on Friday night.
UC Davis improved to 2-3 overall on the year and 2-0 in the tournament following its sweep over Nevada earlier in the day. The Aggies hit .273 as a team while holding the Dons to .085 hitting for the night.
Setter
Jane Seslar racked up a double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore
Shira Lahav added 15 more scoops defensively. Freshman
Casi Newman finished with 14 assists.
The Aggies worked quickly to take the first two sets, leading wire-to-wire in each, before gutting out a third-set win to clinch the sweep.
USF scored four of the first five points to jump out to the early lead, before a 4-0 burst by UC Davis gave the Aggies the lead. The two teams continued to trade points before a kill by Webb sparked a 5-0 burst that gave the home side a four-point advantage at 14-10, capped by a
Perri Starkey ace.
The Dons answered with a 5-0 run to regain the lead and it was nip-and-tuck right up until the end. San Francisco erased a two-point UC Davis advantage and had match point at 24-23 before freshman
Megan Lenn found space down the sideline to tie the match at 24-all.
Lenn then combined with
Lana Radakovic on a block to give the Aggies the lead, and freshman
Amara Aimufua found the floor for the final kill.
The final day of tournament play wraps up Saturday (Sept. 4) with Nevada taking on San Francisco at noon, and UC Davis hosting Santa Clara at 5 p.m.
