Aimufua leads Aggies in Moraga

Freshman posts her sixth double-digit kill performance of the year against Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. — UC Davis freshman Amara Aimufua finished with a team-high 12 kills while junior Josephine Ough hit a team-best .455 on the night as the Aggies fell to host Saint Mary's, 3-0, on Friday night in Moraga, Calif.

With her performance Friday night, Aimufua collected her sixth double-digit kill performance of the year, adding a pair of blocks and five digs en route to a 13-point night. Ough finished with six kills in 11 swings, adding a pair of blocks, while sophomore Lana Radakovic finished with seven kills, three aces, and a trio of digs.

UC Davis hit just .141 on the night to the Gaels' .330, while Saint Mary's won the battle at the net, out-blocking the Aggies by a 10-3 count.

The Gaels never trailed in the opening set, using a 5-0 run midway through the set to turn a three-point game into an 11-5 lead in a set they would eventually win, 25-12.

Friday's second set saw the Aggies make the adjustment and jump out quickly with the first two points  and keep Saint Mary's within striking distance, eventually using a kill by Ough to spark a 4-0 run that broke a 9-9 tie and gave the Aggies a 12-9 advantage. UC Davis kept the pressure on, holding a 17-16 lead late and putting the Gaels on the ropes, tying the set at 21 on an attack error.

However, Saint Mary's scored five of the final seven points to take the second, 25-22.

The two teams played another tight set in the third, with neither team leading by more than three. A late 3-0 run by the Gaels pushed their lead to 22-16 and back-to-back errors ended the match in favor of the home team.

Friday's match closed out the non-conference portion of the UC Davis schedule as the Aggies open Big West play on the road next week, traveling to UC Riverside on Tuesday (Sept. 21) for a 7 p.m. first serve before returning home to host perennial power Hawai'i on Saturday (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m. at the University Credit Union Center on campus.
