DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis freshman
Genavieve Fontes buried a header off a perfectly placed cross from teammate
Risa Yamada in the 36th minute for the only goal of the match on Sunday, lifting the Aggies to a 1-0 victory over Causeway rival Sacramento State at Aggie Soccer Field.
It marked the fourth straight win in the series — and the second shutout in that span — for UC Davis against the Hornets, with three of those four eventually decided by a single goal in a tightly contested rivalry. The Aggies improved to 4-3 overall with the win, while Sacramento State fell to 1-4-1 overall.
UC Davis put its rival on the defensive for most of Sunday's contest, unleashing a barrage of 17 shots to only five for the Hornets, while putting 11 of those 17 attempts on goal. Sacramento State keeper Katie Price finished with 10 saves, but was undone by the one she last past on a golazo by Fontes in the 36th minute for her first career score.
Teammate
Risa Yamada found room on the right side of the field and chipped a pass into the box for Fontes, who sprinted in from the left side and timed her header perfectly, finding space at the lower right corner for the 1-0 advantage.
The helper was Yamada's second assist of the year while Fontes became the seventh different Aggie to find the back of the net this season.
That would be more than enough for the UC Davis defense, which limited the Hornets to only one shot on goal — an Ele Avery attempt in the 87th minute that was easily corralled by goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki to preserve her third clean sheet of the year. The UC Davis defense extended its shutout streak to 219:26 dating back to the second half of a 1-0 defeat at Boise State.
Emma Hasco finished four a team-high four shots on the day, putting two on goal, while Yamada was all over the field, playing all 90 minutes and attempting three shots to go with her game-winning assist. Fontes,
Francesca Van Norden, and
Leslie Fregoso, all chipped in with two shots apiece.
Following Sunday's victory, the Aggies are on the road for their next three contests beginning Thursday (Sept. 16) at 4 p.m., as they travel to Moraga, Calif., to take on Saint Mary's.
