Yamada leads Aggies to road win at Saint Mary's

Gaels were unbeaten in seven games entering Wednesday's contest

MORAGA, Calif. -- Sophomore midfielder Risa Yamada scored the equalizer goal in the 75th minute then assisted Jayde Holley for the go-ahead less than eight minutes later, leading UC Davis to a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's in women's collegiate soccer action at Saint Mary's Stadium.

The Aggies improve to 5-3 overall. The Gaels suffer their first loss of the year, slipping to 5-1-2.

UC Davis outshot SMC by a 15-12 edge, firing 10 shots -- including seven on frame -- in the second half. The Gaels first crafted the initial 1-0 lead with a Suzuna Shibukawa goal in the 22nd minute, then managed a shot on goal and a corner kick for the remainder of the half. However, Aggie goalkeeper Nicki Rucki made the save on the lone shot, one of her four for the game.

Yamada's goal came off a rebound from a Janessa Staab shot in the 75th minute, erasing the deficit. The Aggies halted a pair of SMC corner kicks in the 81st and 82nd, before Yamada delivered to Holley in the 83rd.

Wednesday's win ended non-league play for the Aggies, who return to action at CSU Bakersfield for their Big West Conference opener on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
