FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — After battling to five sets in each of their first two matches at the 2021 Lumberjack Classic, the UC Davis women's volleyball didn't have enough in its tournament finale to overcome Pac-12 power Arizona State, falling to the Sun Devils by a 3-0 score on Saturday.
Sophomore
Lana Radakovic led the Aggies with nine kills and hit a team-high .350, adding three digs and four blocks to cap off her day. Freshman
Olivia Utterback added eight kills and five digs, while junior
Josephine Ough finished with seven kills and four more blocks.
UC Davis led early in an opening set that saw six ties, jumping out to a 4-2 lead and holding the advantage until the Sun Devils' Beatrice Badini found the floor for a, 7-6, Arizona State lead. The Aggies battled back and tied the match at 10 apiece on a kill by Ough, but the Sun Devils scored five of the next six points to build a four-point advantage they would not relinquish en route to a 25-18 victory.
Arizona State jumped out quickly in the second, scoring seven of the first nine points to take control early as UC Davis would not come closer than four points the rest of the way in a 25-16 loss. The Sun Devils scored four of the final five points the clinch the set, with freshman
Maddie Gleason collecting her first career kill in that stretch for the Aggies.
The third saw the two teams trade points to start the set before a 6-2 burst by Arizona State gave the Sun Devils a four-point, 9-5, advantage. A service error brought the Aggies back to within three, but that would be as close as UC Davis would get as ASU scored six of the next seven to extend its advantage and never look back.
With the tournament portion of the schedule behind them, the Aggies return home on Thursday (Sept. 16) at 6 p.m., hosting California at the University Credit Union Center, before making their own trip to the Bay Area to face Saint Mary's on Friday (Sept. 17) at 6 p.m.
Fans planning to attend Thursday's match against the Golden Bears are reminded that proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours of the match are required prior to entry for all fans over the age 12.
