DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis will head to Southern California for the final weekend of the season when it faces Long Beach State in a four-game series. Action at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field will begin Friday night at 6 p.m., continue with Saturday's 12 p.m. doubleheader and conclude Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Â
Since Long Beach State is limiting in-person attendance to donors and season ticket holders, UC Davis baseball fans can follow the action through a video stream (Friday; Sat., Gm. 1; Sat., Gm. 2; Sunday) or live stats by clicking respective links for each game.
Â
UC Davis last visited Long Beach in 2018Â and won the final two games of that series by respective scores of 3-0, in 10 innings, and 10-1. When the Dirtbags visited Phil Swimley Field the following season, the Aggies swept the series. With those results, the Ags will face LBSUÂ for the first time since that three-game sweep with wins in five straight head-to-head games.
Â
Edged late in its home finale vs. Cal Poly last weekend, UC Davis will look to bounce back against a Long Beach State squad that took three of four road games against its rival, Cal State Fullerton. With its results against the Titans, Long Beach State will enter this weekend's series with 15 of its 24 wins earned on the road.
Â
As is the case with CSUN, Long Beach State opened its 2021 schedule with its Big West opener against Hawai'i, and did not participate in any non-conference matchups prior to its first game against the Rainbow Warriors. The Dirtbags did travel to Stockton during its bye week, and won two of three games versus Pacific — the only non-league action for LBSU this year.
Â
UC Davis third baseman
Jalen Smith will return to action following a strong series against Cal Poly: He led the team at the plate with a .375 average, scored three of the Aggies' 10 runs and six of their 21 hits against the Mustangs. Of those six hits, three were for extra bases. Smith will also head to Southern California ranked No. 2 in stolen bases (15), No. 6 in the league in doubles (15), No. 7 in the league in hits (67).
Â
In addition to scoring a pair of runs, outfielder
Jake Brandel finished the final homestand of 2021 with a team-high four RBI.
Â
Jake Spillane, who has started a league-high 14 games this season, helped the Aggies start the weekend on a positive note by striking out four CP batters, and allowed only one earned run in his 6.2 innings pitched to pick up the victory.
Â
Responsible for seven of his team's wins, junior right-hander Johnathan Lavalee also leads Long Beach State's starters with a 2.13 ERA, 67 strikeouts, and is responsible for the team's only complete game. Freshman outfielder/right-hand pitcher Devereaux Harrison is the team's primary closer, and enters his team's final set of home games with a 1.72 ERA and nine of LBSU's 12 saves.
Â
Redshirt freshman outfielder Connor Kokx leads the Dirtbags at the plate with his .367 average, and also holds team-high figures in runs (33), hits (54), doubles, (9), total bases (83) and stolen bases (12).
