DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis women's swimming and diving program closed out 2020-21 with the Barbara Jahn Invitational swim meet with UC Santa Cruz at Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday and Sunday, providing both teams with one more competition in an otherwise COVID-stricken school year. 

The Aggies had four multiple winners to highlight their weekend action. Freshman Jessica Chu was a triple-winner, capturing the 400-meter individual medley with a time of five minutes, 42.15 seconds. She then scored victories in the two distance freestyle events: a 10:02.40 in the 800-meter race, and a 19:01.58 in the 1,500-meter meet finale.

Freshman Kailee Ruiz captured the 200-meter individual medley at 2:26.71, then edged teammate Dani Fasan for the victory in the 100-meter freestyle at 59.97. Sophomore Amelia Cho won both breaststroke events, with times of 33.72 and 1:14.62 in the 100- and 200-meter races. Another sophomore, Anna Lee, picked up victories in both butterfly events with a 28.57 in the 50 and 1:02.62 in the 100. Lee also made a second attempt at the U.S. Olympic Trials 100 fly qualifying standards by swimming the 200 fly. She responded with a 1:02.00 split in that event, just shy of the 1:00.69 cutoff for the Wave I meet. 

The meet featured an unusual format: preliminaries were held on a 25-yard course, then the pool was converted to a 50-meter course for the finals and consolation finals in the afternoon. The 25-yard short course is the standard for collegiate meets, including the NCAA Championships, while the 50-meter LCM course is the one used for major international competitions, such as the Olympic Games. 

As such, all winning times in Saturday's and Sunday's afternoon finals set Schaal Aquatics Center records, as the meet saw the first collegiate LCM races ever to be held in the venue. 

The meet also included one- and three-meter diving competitions on Saturday (results not available). 

Visiting UC Santa Cruz is coached by Aggie alumnus Matt Crawford, who competed for UC Davis during its first years at Schaal Aquatics Center, then later served as the facility's manager. He also coached for the Davis Aquamonsters alongside Aggie assistant Pete Motekaitis and Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Famer Koren (Pollock) Motekaitis.

The Barbara Jahn Invitational was named in honor of the longtime Aggie head coach who retired at the end of the 2021 season. Assistant coach Pete Motekaitis served as the head UC Davis coach for the meet.
