DAVIS, Calif. – Nick Johnson held Cal Poly scoreless during the second game of Saturday's Big West Conference doubleheader, and
Jake Brandel earned his second RBI of that contest when
Jalen Smith scored on a sacrifice fly to center, which gave UC Davis a 2-1 lead through three innings.
It was then when Johnson entered the game and allowed the Mustangs to muster only three hits throughout his 2.2-inning appearance.
The Aggies' 2-1 lead remained untouched for four innings until CP scored twice in the top of the eighth to turn its one-run deficit into a one-run lead entering the game's final innings.
Retired in order in the eighth, the game-winning run for UC Davis reached the plate with two outs in the ninth following a walk drawn by
Michael Campagna. After
J.D. Mico entered as a pinch runner, he advanced to second on a Mustang wild pitch. But that was as close as the Aggies came to tying the score since Cal Poly withstood their late charge to record a 3-2 victory and sweep the day's action since a pair of home runs helped it win the first game, 5-1.
UC Davis will enter Sunday's 1 p.m. home finale at 14-38 overall and 8-27 in league play, Cal Poly's records are 26-25 and 16-19, respectively.
Aggie fans are encouraged to arrive to Phil Swimley Field by 12:35 p.m. since that is when UC Davis will begin its Senior Day ceremony.

Two swings helped Cal Poly take an early 3-0 lead since those runs were scored on a solo home run in the first and another two-run shot in the third.
Even though UC Davis scored its first run of the day in its half of the third when Smith hit a RBI single to left, which allowed
Nick Iverson to score, that was the only run Mustang starter Andrew Alvarez allowed in his complete-game victory as the Mustangs added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings to secure their first win of the weekend.
