BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Jalen Smith's sacrifice fly to left field scored the only run UC Davis needed in Friday's series opener since
Jake Spillane threw a gem throughout his six-inning appearance.
Â
The sophomore right-hander fanned five CSU Bakersfield batters and allowed only five hits, as he,
Zach Carrell and
Nathan Peng combined efforts to help the Aggies notch their second straight shutout result by defeating the host Roadrunners, 5-0.
Â
UC Davis (7-20, 3-10 BWC) will face an opportunity to win the series when these teams return to Hardt Field for tomorrow's 12 p.m. doubleheader. In addition to a video stream (
Gm. 1 stream/
Gm. 2 stream),
live stats are available for both games.
Â
Leading 1-0, the Aggies took full advantage of a Roadrunner error in the fifth inning by extending their lead to four runs, which started with a one-out single through the left side of the infield from Smith. After stealing second, he was joined on base by
Cooper Morrison after he drew a walk.
Â
An error from CSUBÂ (6-6, 3-2 BWC) second baseman Jashia Morrissey allowed Smith to double UC Davis' lead and Brandel to reach base. As the inning continued,
Spencer Gedestad reached first on a fielder's choice when Morrison was thrown out at home, but ended up on third shortly thereafter following two Roadrunner wild pitches.
Those CSU Bakersfield miscues allowed Brandel to score the Aggies' second run.
A two-out single from
Conner Longrie drove in Gedestad, who scored the final run of the inning for UC Davis.
Â
After a stellar two-inning performance from Carrell, Peng took the mound in the ninth after the Aggies added an insurance run when Smith scored on a sac fly from Gedestad.
Â
Down by five entering its final set of at bats, CSUB was retired in order and UC Davis collected a victory in the inaugural head-to-head Big West game between the Aggies and Roadrunners.
