HONOLULU – The Aggies' comeback started with a leadoff double from Jalen Smith in the top of the sixth inning of Sunday's Big West Conference matchup in Honolulu, who scored his team's first run on a sacrifice fly to center field from Jake Brandel.

The Aggies were in position to score at least one more run that inning, if not more as action continued in the frame, but Hawai'i's first baseman made a diving stop on a two-out hard-hit grounder down the first base line from Colton Evans to record the third out.

UC Davis trimmed another run from its five-run deficit — Hawai'i scored once in the first inning and another four in the fifth, with a bloop hit down the left field line that barely landed in fair territory causing most of the damage in the bottom of that frame — when it scored again in the top of the seventh.

Reaching first on a leadoff single up the middle, Kyler Arenado reached third following back-to-back singles rom Conner Longrie and Michael Campagna, then scored on a Jackson O'Boy grounder to second.

Entering the eighth inning within striking distance, trailing the Rainbow Warriors, 5-2 with two sets of at bats still remaining, the Aggies were unable to pull closer to UH following its half of the frame. But it was that inning when Hawai'i pulled away by scoring another four runs to defeat UC Davis, 9-2, in the series finale.

UC Davis will return to the mainland with a 10-28 overall and 5-19 Big West record; by collecting its 16th victory of the year at Les Murakami Stadium this season, Hawai'i improved to 20-14 and 12-12.

Evans and Longrie each reached base safely on three of their four at bats, Smith and Arenado each scored once for UC Davis.

Once the Aggies return to the mainland, they will begin prepping for their upcoming seven-game homestand, which starts with Saturday's 12 p.m. doubleheader versus San José State.
