DAVIS, Calif. – By scoring in five of the eight innings that took place in the back-half of a non-conference doubleheader at Phil Swimley Field, highlighted by its six-run third, UC Davis earned a split of the day's action by defeating San José State, 12-2, since the visiting Spartans edged the Aggies, 4-3, in the series opener.
Â
In Saturday's second game, SJSU took an early 1-0 lead by scoring once in the top of the second inning, and that ended up being the team's highlight for the rest of the day since UC Davis tied the game at 1-1 on back-to-back doubles, in the bottom of the frame, from
Isaiah Verrett and
Jackson O'Boy.
Â
That was the first of a career-high three RBI earned by O'Boy throughout the game.
Â
In the next inning, singles from
Cooper Morrison and
Spencer Gedestad led to the Aggies' next two runs when
Ben Griffin and O'Boy singled up the middle and drew a walk, respectively, with the bases loaded. As action continued, the Spartans committed a pair of two-out errors and UC Davis made them pay dearly for each miscue.
Â
The first fielding error, committed with the bases loaded, allowed Arenado and Griffin to score since each ran on contact and never stopped until they touched home plate. A dropped fly ball on the following at bat allowed O'Boy and
Nick Iverson to record UC Davis' final runs of the third.
Â
Armed with a six-run lead when her returned to the bump in the fourth,
Tim Wieser continue to shine and earned his second win of the year by allowing only one earned run throughout his five-inning appearance.
Â
By pitching effectively throughout his four innings in relief — he gave up only three hits and struckout five —
Kaden Riccomini collected his second save of the season.
Â
Even through SJSU could not pull itself any closer to the Aggies after scoring its final run of the day in the fifth, UC Davis continued to pull away from the Spartans in their half of the sixth on a
Jake Brandel sacrifice fly, and again in the seventh on a fielder's choice to second from O'Boy.
Â
The Aggies' three-run eighth started with a triple to center from Gedestad, which drove in Morrison and
Conner Longrie. On the very next at bat, Arenado's grounder to short allowed Gedestad to score.
Â
By hitting a two-run home run in the top of the third of Saturday's opening game, San Jose took an early 3-0 lead, but it was a two-out single up the middle that ultimately allowed the Spartans to escape with a win because the Aggies battled back and pulled within one as the afternoon progressed.
Â
The Aggies chopped their four-run deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth when
Jalen Smith's double to left center allowed Iverson to score their team's first run of the day. After Smith advance to third on a wild pitch, an errant throw from SJSU's catcher sailed over the third baseman, rolled down the left field line and allowed Smith to trot home.
Â
A Brandel sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth allowed
J.D. Mico to pull UC Davis within one, but San José State was able to record the final outs of the game and survive the Aggies' late charge.
Â
Sunday's series finale from Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium will start at 1 p.m.,
live stats and a
video stream are available for UC Davis' final non-conference game of the season.
