Aggies sweep Hornets to end regular season

UC Davis wins third straight heading into next week's Big West Championships

SACRAMENTO — The UC Davis women's beach volleyball team closed out the 2021 regular season with a pair of victories over its Causeway rivals, sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from host Sacramento State by the scores of 5-0 and 4-1 on Saturday morning at Hornet Beach.

The Aggies improved to 9-16 overall on the season and won their season-best third straight dual heading into next week's Big West Conference Championships in Long Beach, Calif. The Hornets, who only opened their season back on April 11, fell to 0-7 overall on the year.

All 10 head-to-head contests were decided in straight sets — only the third and fourth times that has happened to the Aggies in a match this year — as UC Davis opened the day with its second-ever shutout.

Paloma Bowman and Colleen McGuire won both of their contests at the ones, including a pair of 21-9 set wins, to extend their winning streak to three straight. The duo has now won a team-best 13 matches overall — 12 of those coming at the ones, and improving to 8-2 in their last 10 matches.

The pairing of Megan Luly and Heather Reed also went 2-0 on the day at the twos, as did Ashlee Goycoochea and Alicia Letvin at the fives, extending their respective winning streaks to three matches as well. Alexa Rockas and Rose Holscher finished 2-0 at the fours to even their record as a pair at 2-2 on the season.

Jane Seslar and Madelin Smith split their two matches at the threes, winning 21-14, 21-12, in the opener, improving to 5-5 overall on the year and 4-4 at that spot in the lineup this year.

The two wins at the twos by Luly and Reed gave them five at that spot in the lineup this year, setting a new single-season mark for wins by a pair, while the four wins by Seslar and Smith at the threes matches Bowman and Josephine Ough's mark for single-season wins at that spot.

This year's Big West Championships begin on Friday (April 30) and run through Saturday (May 1). More information can be found via the league's website at https://bigwest.org/sports/2021/3/5/beachvbchamp20.aspx.
