DAVIS, Calif. – David Goulak and Andrei Volgin each won their respective singles matchups in three sets during Saturday's Big West Conference home finale at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in thrilling fashion.

After winning the first set, 6-2, Volgin dropped the next set by a 2-6 result before edging Lucas Labrunie in the final frame by a 7-5 score. His teammate, Goulak, battled back after losing the first set, 2-6, by winning the next two by scores of 6-4 and 7-6 to earn two team points for the Aggies.

Combined with the team point earned in the doubles round, the Aggies needed one more to secure a victory in its final home event of the 2021 season. However, the other four singles contests ended in Hawai'i's favor, as the visiting Rainbow Warriors edged UC Davis by a 4-3 overall score.

Starting with Friday's 11 a.m. rivalry showdown at Sacramento State, men's tennis' final three duals will take place on the road as it will visit UC Riverside (April 23) and UC Irvine (April 24) before competing in the Big West's year-end tournament.

The Aggies will enter next week's match against the Hornets with a 6-9 overall and 1-3 Big West record. Hawai'i will return home with records of 4-3 and 3-3, respectively, and will not return to action until the league playoffs commence at the end of the month.

Even though UH won the first doubles match, UC Davis won the final two by matching 6-4 scores. Volgin and his partner, Mitchell Davis, topped Blaz Seric and Axel Labrunie; Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson won the decisive doubles match by defeating Simao Telo Alves and Tristan Martins.
