Aggies edge Gaels for first 2021 victory

UC Davis picks up a win over a receiving votes Saint Mary's squad

STANFORD, Calif. — The UC Davis tandem of Rose Holscher and Madelin Smith posted a 21-15, 13-21, 15-8, win at threes on Saturday afternoon, breaking a 2-2 tie in their match with Saint Mary's and giving the Aggies their first win of the year, 3-2, over the Gaels to wrap up a doubleheader at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium.

The Aggies, who fell to No. 18 Stanford by a 5-0 score in the day's opener, improved to 1-2 overall, taking down a Saint Mary's squad that entered the day 2-0 and one of five schools receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Beach Volleyball Poll.

Jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead, UC Davis took control early with a win at the twos by the duo of Paloma Bowman and Colleen McGuire, 21-16, 21-9, while Jane Seslar and Alexa Rockas posted a 21-19, 21-11, win at the fours.

The Gaels answered with wins at the fives and the ones to tie the match before all eyes turned to the threes, where the Aggies were able to close things out in the first-ever meeting with Saint Mary's.

Earlier in the day, Seslar and Rockas were able to extend their match at the fours to three sets, bounding back from a 21-17 defeat in the opener to post a 21-19 win in the second set before falling 15-9.

Holscher and Smith also pushed the Stanford duo at the threes before falling 24-22 in the opener and 21-15 in the second set.

UC Davis returns to action next weekend, opening the home portion of its season with a dual against Arizona on Friday (March 12) at Noon, before hosting the Wildcats in a pairs tournament on Saturday (March 13) beginning at 8 a.m.
