McAdams protects Aggie net in 6-4 win over No. 15 SJSU

Spartans shoot just 4-for-30 against UC Davis freshman's 14 saves

DAVIS, Calif. -- Freshman Nellie McAdams posted 14 saves in her first collegiate start at goalkeeper, leading No. 11 UC Davis to a 6-4 won over No. 15 San Jose State in collegiate women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 3-2 for the year. The Spartans slip to 0-2.

Junior center Noelle Wijnbelt netted two goals to lead UC Davis offensively, while Allyson Clague, Grace Pelkey, McKenna Martin and Alyssa Lengtat each scored one. Junior utility Olga Descalzi Portell hit two goals with an assist for the Spartans, but SJSU shot a combined 4-for-30 as a team.

UC Davis also allowed its guests 11 power-play opportunities, but only Lili Urvari and Descalzi Portell managed to score on them. Meanwhile, the Aggies converted two of their 6-on-5 chances, including a buzzer-beater by Clague to end the first quarter. UC Davis led 2-1 at the end of that frame, and 3-2 at halftime.

Descalzi Portell's conversion with 3:03 in the third tied the contest at 4-4, but McAdams held SJSU scoreless for the remainder. Meanwhile, Martin's goal with 47 ticks left in the third was the go-ahead. Lengtat made it 6-4 early in the fourth, gaining possession at midtank after an offensive foul, then advancing nearly untouched to the Spartan cage.

UC Davis returns to action on Sunday with a road game at No. 18 Pacific. Game time is 11 a.m.
