SAN DIEGO, Calif. — An early deficit turned into a runaway victory for the UC Davis women's lacrosse team, as the Aggies handed host San Diego State an 18-7 defeat at the Aztec Lacrosse Field on Friday afternoon.
The win catapulted UC Davis to 4-1 overall on the season, taking a 6-5 lead in the series with SDSU and winning for the first time in San Diego since April 8, 2018. The Aztecs fell to 2-3 overall on the year with the defeat.
Senior
Maddie Myers finished with eight points on the day thanks to five goals and three assists on nine shots, adding four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Senior
Sorana Larson, who entered the week ranked No. 2 in the nation in goals, bent the net five more times on nine shots and added an assist, collecting her third match with at least five goals scored this season and her fifth hat trick in as many games.
Sophomore
Alex Agnew tallied her second hat trick of the season to go along with an assist on five shots, while senior
Anna Hofgard finished with a pair of scores. Senior
Kate Graham (who also added nine draw controls to tie Myers for the most by an Aggie this season), senior
Kaley Stunz, and junior
Brooke Long also found the back of the net in the rout as UC Davis out-shot its host by a 40-23 count, putting 29 shots on goal and finishing 8-for-8 on free position attempts.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Taylor Mathieson finished with nine saves and a .563 save percentage, while senior
Ally Deremer finished with six ground ball pickups and three caused turnovers.
Ranking No. 15 in the nation in scoring offense entering the week, the Aggies fell behind early as four different San Diego State players found the back of the net in the first 12 minutes around goals by Graham and Myers for a 4-2 advantage.
From that point on, it was all UC Davis. Larson scored twice during a 5-0 run, including the go-ahead score at the 11:15 mark, that gave the Aggies the lead for good and finished the period with seven of the last eight in the half as Agnew added a pair in the final five minutes of the period for a 9-5 advantage.
Agnew, Myers, and Larson, all scored to open the second half as the goals came in bunches for UC Davis, which limited San Diego State to just two goals after the break.
The Aggies' brief two-game road swing concludes on Sunday (March 7) at 3 p.m., as UC Davis takes on No. 18 USC in Los Angeles.
