Aggies rally past Matadors to split in San Luis Obispo

UC Davis upends CSUN, 3-2, before falling to No. 19 Long Beach State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The UC Davis beach volleyball team wrapped up its stay in San Luis Obispo, Calif., with its second straight win, coming from behind to defeat CSUN and earn a split of its final two matches on Saturday afternoon at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.

The Aggies wrapped up the weekend with a 3-10 overall record, earning back-to-back wins for the first time this season with their win over the Matadors coupled with Friday night's win over CSU Bakersfield.

Paloma Bowman and Colleen McGuire got the morning off right for UC Davis, quickly dispatching Lauren Eknoian and Meagan Carter, 21-14, 21-19, at the ones for the 1-0. lead. CSUN answered with back-to-back wins at the fives and the fours to take the lead, but the Aggie tandem of the Jane Seslar and Ashlee Goycoochea went three sets to defeat Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan, 21-19, 20-22, 15-9, to knot the match at two apiece.

That turned all the attention to the twos where Heather Reed and Megan Luly won the first set 21-16, but were edged in the second 24-22. Extended to three sets for the second time this weekend, the duo came through to clinch the win, taking the third set 15-12.

In the second half of the doubleheader, Reed and Luly went to three sets once again before falling, 21-17, 18-21, 15-13, and The Beach swept the remaining four pairs in straight sets for the 5-0 win.

UC Davis heads to Tucson, Ariz., next week to compete at the Arizona Invitational, scheduled to take on Grand Canyon, the host Wildcats, Colorado Mesa, and Missouri State, along with another team to be announced. The tournament begins Friday (April 2) and runs through Saturday (April 3).
