SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The UC Davis duo of sophomore
Bailey Herdman and junior
Nicole Andrade came up big in three sets on Friday evening, handing CSU Bakersfield's Mapuhola Sekona and Leisa Elisaia a 25-23, 13-21, 17-15, defeat and clinch a 3-2 victory for the Aggies to close out day one at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
After battling nationally ranked foes No. 10 Hawai'i and No. 5 Cal Poly in the first two matches of the day, UC Davis improved to 2-9 overall on the year with the win over the Roadrunners — its second in as many meetings in the series with CSU Bakersfield.
Junior
Jane Seslar and senior
Ashlee Goycoochea, who went three sets in each of their first two matches against the Rainbow Wahine and the Mustangs, opened the scoring against the Roadrunners with a straight-set, 21-18, 22-20, win over Anna Unke and Brooke Boiseau at the threes.
At the top of the Aggie lineup, the pairing of junior
Paloma Bowman and freshman
Colleen McGuire added a second win in straight sets for the 2-0 advantage overall, defeating Emily Hansen and Hana Makonova, 21-16, 22-20, at the ones.
With UC Davis needing just one more point to lay claim to a victory, CSU Bakersfield responded with straight set wins at the twos and fours to knot the match at two apiece, setting the stage for Herdman and Andrade's win at the fives as the duo bounced back from a second-set defeat to outlast the Roadrunner duo in the third.
In all, five of the Aggies' matches went three sets on the day, as Bowman and McGuire won the second set in a three-set battle against Hawai'i's Amber Igiede and Brooke Van Sickle, and Seslar and Goycoochea won the first before the Rainbow Wahine took the next two to help complete a 5-0 sweep.
Against Cal Poly, Seslar and Goycoochea again went blow-for-blow with Sam Strah and Eleonore Johansen in a marathon three-setter, falling, 21-14, 23-25, 20-18, while the tandem of
Heather Reed and
Megan Luly extended their contest against Amy Ozee and Jayelin Lombard to three before falling, 21-15, 19-21, 15-12.
UC Davis concludes their stay in San Luis Obispo with two more matches on Saturday (March 27), facing CSUN at 10:30 a.m., before battling No. 19 Long Beach State at 1 p.m.
