RECORD SCRATCH
UC Davis set team records for points (73), total offense (768 yards) and touchdowns (10) in Saturday's win over Cal Poly... The previous high for points was a 65-12 win over San Francisco State in 1985... The 10 touchdowns surpassed the record of 9, previously set in games vs. Western Oregon (2002), Mesa State (2000), Cal Poly (2000) and S.F. State (1985)... The Mesa State game, which took place in the NCAA playoff run that year, also had the previous benchmark for total offense with 697... That 2000 squad averaged another record of 518.6 yards per game... The current Aggies have rolled up 1,573 yards in three games for a 524.3 average.
One unusual number that is by default a school record: zero punts...
Daniel Whelan, who does not have the minimum 3.6 attempts per game to qualify for the NCAA FCS statistical leaderboard, saw his average plummet to 2.0... The last time UC Davis had no punts in a game was against Iona on Oct. 18, 2008... UC Davis had only three fourth downs in Saturday's game: a 4th and goal that resulted in a
Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. TD reception, a 4th and 1 that Gilliam converted with a 6-yard run, and a 4th-and-8 spot when
Isaiah Gomez kicked a 31-yard field goal.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
With travel roster limit in effect, UC Davis suited up every healthy player for Saturday's Cal Poly home opener with the vast majority of players seeing the field for at least one series... What follows is a list of first statistical moments for various UC Davis players in that contest... It does not include the numerous Aggies who saw their first action but did not record any stats.
• DB
Markeece Alexander recorded his first UC Davis tackles, finishing the game with 3 solo stops.
• DB
Kevin Cullen made his first Aggie tackle, pushing Juanie Campbell out of bounds in the 4th
• RB
Peyton Dixon made his first Aggie appearance since transferring from Fresno State, rushing for 29 yards on 6 carries.
• QB
Gunnor Faulk posted his first offensive stats, rushing for 8 yards and completing 3 of 3 passes for 48 yards.
• RB
Felipe Figueroa made his collegiate debut, making one 4-yard rush in the final series.
• WR
Casey Granfors hauled in his first Aggie receptions, finishing 2-for-34 for the day.
• WR
Jared Harrell is obviously no stranger to the UC Davis stat sheet, but his 22-yard touchdown against the Mustangs marks his first rushing score... He has 15 carries for 63 yards to go with his 118-for-1,592 career receiving totals.
• QB
Miles Hastings made his collegiate debut, completing 5 of 7 passes with a TD pass to TE
Blake Thorpe.
• RB
Christoph Hirota, who saw action throughout 2019 in the backfield and on special teams, hauled in his first Aggie catch.
• WR
C.J. Hutton posted his first Aggie catches, finishing 2-for-41... He had previously rushed for 15 yards and 4 carries at Weber State, and added another 5-for-33 against Cal Poly.
• LB
Zach Jones made his Aggie debut, posting a solo stop against Lepi Lataimua in the 4th quarter.
• DB
Algery McGuire hit Chuby Dunu for his first Aggie TFL of 3 yards.
• DB
Mario Minor posted his first Aggie tackle, a solo stop of Dunu to end the 3rd quarter.
• DL
Luka Nixon, a third-year veteran, posted his first 2 TFLs as an Aggie (both sacks), totaling 12 yards.
• TE
Garren O'Keefe, a regular on special teams in 2019, hauled in his first Aggie reception to start the 2nd quarter.
• WR
Justin Poerio, another longtime contributor on special teams, collected 2 receptions for 29 yards for his first Aggie offensive stats.
• K
Henry Reich made his Aggie debut, replacing
Daniel Whelan on kickoff duties after the Hastings-Thorpe TD.
• TE
Blake Thorpe scored his first UC Davis TD, hauling in a 12-yarder from
Miles Hastings early in the 4th.
• QB
Trent Tompkins scored his first Aggie TD with 2:46 in the third, then added an 86-yard scamper in the 4th (see below for more).
• WR
Anthony Villegas made his collegiate debut with a 1-yard carry in the final series... The stats nearly got negated due to a holding penalty, but since the infraction occurred beyond the line of scrimmage, the stats count on the play.
• DL
Kyree Woods made his Aggie debut, halting QB Hunter Raquet for a solo stop midway through the 4th quarter.
HE... COULD... GO... ALL... THE... WAY...
Freshman QB
Trent Tompkins rushed for an 86-yard touchdown with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter against Cal Poly, 8th longest in school history and only the 12th of 80 yards or more... It was the longest since RB Manusamoa Luuga scored a 90-yarder vs. Southern Oregon in the 2016 home opener... Tompkins now has 100 career rushing yards yet has not completed a pass... His run made ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 plays for March 21.
FLAVORS OF THE WEEK
The trio of QB
Hunter Rodrigues, LB
Cole Hansen and DB
Isaiah Thomas collected Root Sports Big Sky Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively... Rodrigues threw for three TD passes and ran for another, all in the second quarter... Hansen posted 8 total tackles, with 4.0 TFLs and 2.0 sacks... Thomas had a 30-yard punt return, which also moved him up to 5th in the Aggies' career list for PR yards...With 443 total in his fourth year as the team's primary punt return man, he now has Artemus Jones (1996-99) as the next target on the list... Jones had 507 yards to go with his school-record 2,999 kick return ticks... Hansen and Rodrigues also earned honorable mention for Stats Perform National Player of the Week distinction... This is the first time UC Davis has swept all three Big Sky weekly awards since joining the conference in 2012... The last time Aggies won multiple honors was October 29, 2018, when
Mason Moe and
Daniel Whelan respectively earned Defensive and Special Teams after the wild win at Montana.
CENTURION
RB Ulonzo Gilliam rushed for 101 yards while adding another 11 in the air, marking the second time this season he has amassed at least 100 yards of combined yards from scrimmage... He hit the century mark seven times in 2019, eight times in 2018... Gilliam is one of 10 players in all of FCS averaging at least 100 rushing yards per game (103.0)... He continues to rank fourth in school history in career rushing yards at 2,534, now 434 behind Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Famer Ronnie Austin (2,968 from 1977-80)... Gilliam's 112 combined yards against Cal Poly raised his all-purpose total to 3,301, moving him ahead of Jermaine Rucker for ninth all-time at UC Davis.
ABOUT THE BENGALS
Junior QB Tyler Vander Waal, a former Wyoming transfer originally, threw for 409 yards in Idaho State's March 13 home battle with Eastern Washington... His visit to UC Davis Health Stadium will mark his first collegiate game relatively close to home: he hails from nearby Elk Grove and Christian Brothers High – the very school where Aggie head coach
Dan Hawkins held his first head coaching position... Vander Waal was a high school teammate of current Aggie QB
Gunnor Faulk, and both played under Dan Carmazzi, a former UC Davis signal-caller... ISU won its March 6 game on a 30-yard Kevin Ryan field goal with :05 remaining, sealing a 26-24 victory at Southern Utah... Like all but two teams in the Big Sky Conference, the Bengals come off a bye during the March 20 weekend.
ABOUT THE SERIES
UC Davis is undefeated (4-0) in its all-time series with Idaho State, dating back to the program's entrance into the Big Sky Conference in 2012... The last meeting, the Homecoming Game at then-Aggie Stadium on Oct. 13, 2018, was also the last overtime game UC Davis has played... The Aggies rallied back from an initial 23-7 hole to force the extra time, then won, 44-37, on Ulonzo Gilliam's 4-yard run in the first OT series...
Terrell Cloud then recorded two tackles in the Bengals' turn to equalize... QB
Jake Maier completing 40 of 51 passes for 382 yards and career-high five TDs...
Keelan Doss hauled in 13 passes for 131 yards in a meeting that also had the unusual distinction of having two two-point conversions.
#PUNTERSAREPEOPLETOO
Punter
Daniel Whelan still has six punts for 304 yards for a 50.67 average, but is not eligible for the NCAA statistical leaders, which requires a minimum of 3.6 punts per game... Still, he paces the Big Sky Conference with that average, almost five yards ahead of Idaho's Logan Prescott (who only has four attempts)... His career averages holds at 42.94 (6,012 yards on 140 attempts)... In comparison, the top two punters in UC Davis history are Colton Schmidt (41.12 from 2009-12) and Colby Wadman (40.96 from 2013-16), both of whom went on to NFL careers... The Dublin, Ireland product has 60 career punts inside opponent 20-yard lines... While no official records exist for this stat, Schmidt had 80 such punts while Wadman had 68 as four-year starters... Whelan also has three punts for 50-plus yards in two games, after hitting that threshold 17 times in each of his freshman and sophomore seasons... Whelan began the season earning a spot on the FCS Punter of the Year watch list for the second straight year.
