DAVIS, Calif. — Taking on a pair of the nation's top teams on the beach this season, the UC Davis beach volleyball team suffered a pair of sweeps against No. 19 Stanford and No. 6 Hawai'i, falling by identical 5-0 scores on Monday afternoon at the UC Davis Beach Volleyball Courts on campus.
The Aggies fell to 1-5 overall with the losses, with all six of their matches this season coming against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball poll.
In the opener, the Aggies were swept by the No. 19-ranked Cardinal, 5-0, for the second time this season, but put up a fight against the nationally ranked Cardinal, extending a pair of matches to three sets before falling.
The UC Davis ones of
Paloma Bowman and
Colleen McGuire jumped out to the early lead with a 21-19 victory in the opening set, but could not keep the momentum going, eventually falling 21-15 and 15-12. At the fives, the duo of
Savanah Schroeder and
Alexa Rockas bounced back from an opening set loss to take the second 21-17, before falling 15-6 in the third.
It marked the second and third times that the Aggies have been able to take Stanford to three sets in a match this season after Rockas and Seslar lost a, 21-17, 19-21, 15-9, three-set decision back on March 6.
After Stanford handed Hawai'i a 4-1 loss in the Rainbow Wahine's season opener, Hawai'i answered with a 5-0 sweep of UC Davis, taking four of the five matches in straight sets. The Aggie duo of
Jane Seslar and
Ashlee Goycoochea were the only ones to push the Rainbow Wahine to a third set, winning the opener 21-16, before falling 21-14 and 15-10.
UC Davis returns to the courts on Tuesday (March 23) beginning at 11 a.m., taking on No. 11 California, before hosting Hawai'i once again at 3 p.m. The Golden Bears and Rainbow Wahine will battle in between those contests at 1 p.m.
