FULLERTON, Calif. -- Second-year freshman first baseman
Sarah Starks hit a combined 5-for-6 with three RBI, but UC Davis came up on the losing end of two run-rule games to Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference women's softball doubleheader at Anderson Family Field Saturday. The Aggies lost the opener, 12-4, in five innings; then lost the nightcap on a walk-off hit by Titan left fielder Bailey Wallace in an 8-0 final in six frames.
UC Davis moves to 6-15 for the year and opens conference play at 0-2. Cal State Fullerton improves to 17-11 overall and 2-0 in Big West games.
Starks went 2-for-3 with a two-run single in the fourth inning plus another RBI single in the fifth during Game 1. Shortstop
Isabella Leon and right fielder
Megan Bower each went 2-for-3 as well, but CSF posted three runs in the second, four in the third, then four more in its bottom half of the fourth. Bower, who scored on Starks' fourth-inning hit, doubled to left center in the fifth before Starks brought her in with a rap to left.
In Game 2, Starks ended up with half of her team's six hits: singles in the first, fourth and sixth innings. However, she was stranded in the first, thrown out on a bases-loaded force out in the fourth, then forced out at third in that final trip around the bases. Freshman
Libbie McMahan added two hits in the nightcap.Â
The Aggies and Titans complete their first Big West series of the year on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
