8-1 win leads to series victory vs. Portland

DAVIS, Calif. – Zach Carrell struckout seven and earned his first win of the season by throwing five shutout innings, and led by Jake Brandel with two, seven different Aggies drove in a run throughout Monday's series finale at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium as UC Davis won the game, 8-1, and its first series of the season.
 
The Ags will enter Friday's 2 p.m. home series opener vs. CBU with a 3-4 record while Portland returns home at 2-4.
 
Brandel started the bottom of the second with a lead-off single and scored the first run of the day on Shaun McHale's double to left field. The following Aggie at bat saw McHale score and double his team's lead on a single up the middle from Nick Iverson.
 
In the following frame, it was Brandel who drove in the first of two runs when Kyler Arenado, who drew a five-pitch walk to start the inning. With the bases loaded — prior to Brandel's single to left field, Cooper Morrison also hit a single to left, followed by a Michael Campagna walk —  Ben Griffin's sac fly allowed Morrison to trot home and push UC Davis' lead to 4-0.
 
When Portland returned to the plate in the top of the fourth, it loaded the bases with two outs, but Carrell ended the Pilots' most dangerous scoring opportunity of the day by striking out Gabe Skoro looking.
 
The Aggies tacked on a pair of insurance runs when Colton Evans drove in Campagna in the fifth, and Arenado hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, which extended their team's lead to 6-1 entering the final three innings.
 
Throughout that portion of the game, Tim Wieser did not allow Portland to score another run, and his teammates pushed another two runs across in the eighth to seal the victory.
