Aggies drop series opener to California Baptist

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis (3-5) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to complete the comeback in a 6-1 defeat to Cal Baptist (4-4) on Friday afternoon.

With two outs, Colton Evans singled and advanced on a throwing error, pinch hitter Connor Longrie walked and Shaun McHale was plunked to load the bases for Jalen Smith. Smith walked to move everyone over but Cooper Morrison's ground ball to first ended the Aggies' afternoon.

The Aggies were held hitless until Jake Brandel's sharp single to third in the bottom of the fourth but Cal Baptist's Chris Burica made it tough on UC Davis bats all afternoon. Burica went seven innings and allowed just two hits, walking three and striking out nine.

UC Davis threatened again in the bottom of the seventh with Ben Griffin getting hit to lead off and Nick Iverson singling to left with two outs but again Burica was able to silence the rally by striking out pinch-hitter Spencer Gedestad

The series picks up tomorrow at Dobbins Stadium with the second of three games against the Lancers. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
