DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis starter Jake Spillane shined throughout the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium by fanning four batters, walking one and allowing Portland only three hits throughout his five innings pitched. As was the case with their teammate, Kaden Riccomini and Nathan Peng did not allow a run — each threw two innings — and combined efforts to help the Aggies end their day with a 1-0 win.

That result allowed Riccomini to earn his first career victory and to Peng collect his inaugural save as an Aggie. With its win, UC Davis will return for Monday's 1 p.m. rubber game with a 2-4 record; Sunday's loss pushed the Pilots to 2-3.

Following a lead-off double to right center in the sixth inning from Michael Campagna, Ben Griffin's single to right field, which took place two batters later, allowed his teammate to score the game's only run, which was enough for Riccomini and Peng to secure a split of Sunday's doubleheader.

In the series opener, Portland's early 1-0 lead only lasted until the bottom of the inning when Cooper Morrison's double to center drove in Nick Iverson, who initially reached base on a one-out single through the middle of the infield.

With two outs, Campagna broke that tie with a single to center, which allowed Morrison to score from second.

As was the case when the Pilots took their first lead of the game, UC Davis' inaugural lead lasted until the next set of at-bats as Portland turned a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. That advantage grew to a five-run buffer when it drove in a run in the top of the sixth and seventh innings.

UC Davis did rally for two runs in the bottom of the eighth when a Colton Evans' single and a groundout to short from Peng, both with the bases loaded, scored one Aggie run on each occasion.

That two-run rally ended up being the last of the game for the Ags as Portland held onto its 7-4 lead to secure a victory in the series opener.
