SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Fifth-year center fielder Marissa Jauregui hit a combined 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles while freshman Kenedi Brown surrendered just one earned run in a quality start, but UC Davis lost both ends of its Saturday doubleheader in collegiate softball action at San Diego State. The Aggies lost the opener by a 10-4 final, then had their seventh-inning rally thwarted in a 3-1 setback in the nightcap.
UC Davis moves to 0-6 for the year.
Jauregui was one of six Aggies with a hit in the opening loss, and one of three to rap out a double, along with right fielder Megan Bower and designated player Sarah Nakahara. UC Davis supplied the entirety of its Game 1 scoring in the third inning, with Jauregui's sacrifice fly, Bower's RBI double and a two-run homer by freshman Sarah Starks putting the Aggies up by a 4-2 margin. However, the host Aztecs took advantage of three UC Davis errors to score five runs in the bottom half of that frame.
Second-year freshman Taylor Fitzgerald went the distance in the Game 1 loss.
The Aggies again held a short-lived lead in the nightcap, with Jauregui's bases-loaded single pushing across the game's first run in the top of the second. But again, SDSU capitalized on a UC Davis error in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game, then third baseman Jessica Cordola drove in the go-ahead in the next trip to the plate. The Aztecs extended their lead to 3-1 on Alexa Schultz' RBI triple.
UC Davis threatened in its seventh, with Jauregui leading off with a single. Starks moved Jauregui to second, then both runners advanced on a Leah Polson groundout. But San Diego State starter Maggie Balint escaped the jam, striking out Aggie shortstop Libbie McMahan on an eight-pitch battle.
Brown allowed just five hits and struck out five SDSU batters against just two walks in her first complete game of 2021.
The Aggies and Aztecs will conclude the three-game weekend series on Sunday. Game time is 11 a.m. Links to live stats and a video stream are available at the UC Davis softball schedule.
