Aggies ascend standings at MPSF Championships

Mia Motekaitis leads UC Davis with runner-up finish in 200 free; Aggies in third place heading into final day

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- UC Davis placed two student-athletes among the top eight in each of the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke, while sophomore Mia Motekaitis led her team with a second-place showing in the 200 freestyle, helping the Aggies move up to third place at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming and diving championships at Cal Poly's Anderson Aquatic Center Friday.

Motekaitis finished the 200 free in one minute, 49.26 seconds, just 0.15 away from earning her second conference championship. The environmental policy analysis and planning major from Davis, Calif., captured the 500 free title during Thursday's session.

Sophomores Jay Jay Eaton (55.51) and Ashley May (55.77) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 fly. Two more second-year students, Julie Kwan (4:30.95) and Sophia Sebastian (4:31.50), picked up fifth- and sixth-place points in the 400 IM. In the 100 breast, Dani Fasan (1:03.86) finished fifth with Tori Kaleta (1:05.26) in eighth. Then Aggie newcomers Kailee Ruiz (55.49) and Caroline Eckel (56.05) chipped in sixth- and eighth-place scoring in the 100 back.

UC Davis finished the day with 398 team points, despite taking a disqualification in the 400 medley relay. Hawai'i leads the standings at 576.5, with BYU trailing with 523.5 points. UC Santa Barbara slipped behind the Aggies, now sitting in fourth place with 350. Friday's scoring also incorporated the one-meter diving, which was conducted earlier in the week.

The MPSF Championships conclude on Saturday with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
