SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sophomore Mia Motekaitis led off the 200-yard medley relay and anchored the 800-yard freestyle relay, each of which scored four-place points on the first full day of action at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming and diving championships at Cal Poly's Anderson Aquatic Center. Meanwhile, junior Taylor Hornberger advanced to the final in each of the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.
The foursome of Mia Motekaitis, Tori Kaleta, Jay Jay Eaton and Dani Fasan compiled a time of one minute, 43.29 seconds in the 200 medley. Then Elle Motekaitis, Leah Timmerman, Kathryn Bockman and Mia Motekaitis combined to a 7:32.82 in the 800 free relay.
Hornberger was the lone Aggie to advance to the 3-meter diving final, scoring a fourth-place 266.65 total. The high board was actually contested on Tuesday, with the scoring to be incorporated into the meet results on Thursday. Hornerberger again led UC Davis in Wednesday morning's 1-meter session, placing third at 266.10. Those points will enter the meet scoring at the end of Friday.
UC Davis sits in fourth place with a two-event team score of 60 points, just behind UC Santa Barbara's 64. BYU and Hawai'i share the lead with 74 points.
The MPSF Championships continue through Saturday. This is the first year that the meet has been held in an outdoor facility, due to COVID-19 restrictions; and the first year that each swimming event only features a final race rather than the traditional prelim-final format. Thursday's session will feature the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 free and 200 free relay.
