LONG BEACH, Calif. -- UC Davis kept Long Beach State to just 19% from deep in a 4-for-21 shooting performance on the way to a 67-50 victory over on the road Saturday.
UC Davis' overall record moved to 7-1 and conference record improved to 6-0 after the victory.
The Aggies had two players score in double figures, led by cell biology major Cierra Hall, who had 20 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals. Psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic tacked on 13 points, five assists and two steals and environmental science and management major Sage Stobbart added six points.
UC Davis utilized fantastic ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 16 assists on 23 made field goals. Hall's six assists were the most for the Aggies.
UC Davis forced 13 Long Beach State turnovers. The Aggies turned those takeaways into 10 points on the other end of the floor. Hall's six steals led the way for UC Davis.
UC Davis started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a three from neurobiology, physiology & behavior major Evanne Turner, to take an early lead with 7:34 left in the first quarter. The Aggies then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 21-7 advantage. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 21 points.
The Aggies maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 32-21 edge. UC Davis was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 11 points.
Following intermission, UC Davis continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 44-28 before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Hall, to expand its lead further to 54-28 with 1:54 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Beach had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-33 edge. UC Davis played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.
The Aggies then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. UC Davis got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 10 of its 11 total points.
