LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Senior Cierra Hall finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead a balanced scoring effort, and the defense limited host Long Beach State to just 30 percent shooting from the field, as UC Davis ended the Beach's 10-game winning streak with a 67-52 victory on Friday evening at the Walter Pyramid.
UC Davis improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in action following the win.
Cell biology major Hall led the Aggies added five assists and two steals to her stat line, while finishing 4-for-4 from the free throw line to improve to 25-for-25 overall on the season and continue to stand atop the NCAA in free throw percentage. She is now a pair of consecutive free throws shy of the school record of 27 held by Colleen Turnbull from Jan. 4-25, 2003.
No other UC Davis player was in double figures, but 10 players each finished in the scoring column as the Aggies shot just under 42 percent from the field for the game. Neurobiology, physiology & behavior major Evanne Turner tacked on eight points and four assists and environmental science and management major Sage Stobbart helped out with five points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
UC Davis took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 16 assists on 22 made field goals. Hall's five assists led the distribution list for the Aggies.
In addition to its overall defensive performance, UC Davis also held Long Beach State to just 13.6% from beyond the arc.
After falling behind 2-0, UC Davis went on a 7-0 run with 9:24 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Hall, to take a 7-2 lead. The Aggies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 9-6 advantage. UC Davis capitalized on two Long Beach State turnovers in the period, turning them into three points on the other end of the floor.
UC Davis kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 2:58 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Stobbart, to increase its lead to 33-19, a score that would hold until halftime. UC Davis was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 24 points.
UC Davis continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run to expand its lead further to 40-26 with 2:40 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Beach had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 45-34 edge. UC Davis knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.
UC Davis kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 62-45 with 3:17 to go in the contest. The Beach narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Aggies still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-52 win.
The two teams close out their two-game series on Saturday (Feb. 13) at 4 p.m., streamed live on ESPN3 and broadcast live on KDVS 90.3 FM.
