DAVIS, Calif. -- First baseman
Sarah Starks and right fielder
Megan Bower each launched their first home runs of the 2021 season, but UC Davis ultimately dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Nevada by single-run margins in non-conference women's softball action at La Rue Field Friday. The Wolf Pack claimed the opener, 5-4, then held off a seventh-inning rally in a 4-3 nightcap win.
The Aggies slip to 0-4 for the season. The Wolf Pack improves to 3-1.
Starks, who also made key defensive plays throughout the day, sent a solo shot to left in the fifth inning of Game 2 to put UC Davis on the board. Bower then followed with a two-run shot in the seventh to trim a 4-1 deficit to 4-3 before Nevada starter Kendall Fritz closed out the game.
Bower and second baseman
Sommer Kisling each went 1-for-4 in the first game and 2-for-4 in the second to pace UC Davis at the plate. Center fielder
Marissa Jauregui rapped out a double, stole third, and scored a pair of runs in the Game 1 setback.
Aggie freshman
Sarah Reineman made her first collegiate start in Friday's opener, and held the Wolf Pack hitters in check for the first five innings before a Kenzi Goins two-run blast highlighted the Nevada rally. UC Davis scored two runs in the first, then added two more on the fourth to craft a 4-0 lead before the Goins homer cut that edge to 4-3. An error helped push two more runs across in the sixth for Nevada, culminating in the 5-4 final.
UC Davis returns to action for a three-game road series at San Diego State on February 20 and 21.
