NEWS & NOTABLES: This time, it counts. When the five-time defending Big West Conference champion UC Davis women's basketball team hits the floor Tuesday against the Academy of Art, the Aggies will officially open the 2021-22 season, tipping off against the Division II Urban Knights at 6 p.m. UC Davis then hosts regional rival Saint Mary's on Saturday at noon. A unanimous selection to repeat as Big West champs by both the league's coaches and media members according to the preseason polls released last week, the Aggies are coming off a 62-53 victory over Cal State East Bay in an exhibition on Nov. 1, led by second-year freshman Bria Shine's team-high 17 points. Sage Stobbart added 14 points and three blocks, while third-year sophomore Evanne Turner added 12 points on a quartet of three-pointers. NEWS & NOTABLES: The 2021-22 season finally gets underway this week for the UC Davis men's basketball team, as the Aggies head to Logan, Utah, to take on another set of Aggies in Utah State on Tuesday, before their home opener against Eastern Washington in a Friday matinee at 2 p.m. UC Davis hasn't played since an exhibition at William Jessup on Oct. 30 that benefited those affected by the Dixie Fire, defeating the Warriors by a 74-64 score. Sophomore Ezra Manjon was named to the preseason All-Big West team by both the coaches and the media, while classmate Elijah Pepper earned honors from the media and appeared on multiple coaches' ballots. As a team, UC Davis was picked fourth in both the coaches and media polls, finishing behind UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside.

MEN'S WATER POLO
NOV. 11: PACIFIC AT UC DAVIS (SCHAAL AQUATIC CENTER), 7 p.m.

Watch Live | Live Stats

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis men's water polo team will celebrate its seniors as part of its 2021 regular season finale on Veteran's Day as the Aggies host Northern California rival Pacific at Schaal Aquatic Center. It will be the second meeting of the year between UC Davis and the Tigers after the Aggies posted an 11-6 win back on Sept. 17 to open their own Aggie Roundup. UC Davis heads into the finale having wrapped up the top seed in next week's Western Water Polo Association Tournament that it will host at Schaal from Nov. 19-21, facing the winner of Biola and Fresno Pacific on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Aggies won the top seed by virtue of their 13-12 victory over Loyola Marymount last week, giving them a one-game advantage on the field in the final standings.

Live Scoring

NEWS & NOTABLES: The road to Nationals runs through Sacramento – quite literally – this week as UC Davis joins some of the region's best at the NCAA West Regionals on Friday at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento. The women's 6K race begins at 10 a.m., with the men's 10K to follow at 11 a.m. Racing the familiar twists and turns at Wildhorse Golf Club in Davis on Oct. 29, the UC Davis women clinched their third Big West Conference title in runaway fashion, placing five in the top 10 to finish with only 26 points to outpace second-place Cal State Fullerton, which finished with 60 points. Sierra Atkins (20:21.3) led the way with a second-place individual finish as the Aggies finished 2-3-5-6-10. On the men's side, freshman Austin Vasquez finished 10th overall in a time of 24:16.9 and help lead UC Davis to a fourth-place finish as the Aggies finished 10-15-22-26-29 to place behind UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly, and Cal State Fullerton.

NEWS & NOTABLES: UC Davis enters a run of four straight matches away from home on a bit of a roll, winning five of its last seven contests heading into this week's battles with Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield. The Aggies took care of business at home last week, avenging a pair of defeats to UC San Diego and UC Irvine earlier in the year with a 3-1 win over the Tritons and a sweep of the Anteaters in an early-season "Senior Day" celebration for Rachel Churilla and Jane Seslar. Freshmen Olivia Utterback and Amara Aimufua each averaged 3.43 kills per set and hit better than .300 on the year in the two victories, with the former hitting at a .364 clip and the latter hitting .327 for the weekend. Junior Josephine Ough and sophomore Lana Radakovic were formidable in the middle, hitting .469 and .433, respectively, while collecting 11 blocks apiece and averaging 1.57 blocks per set.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The home stretch for the Aggies begins with a crucial Big Sky Conference matchup against a pair of top-10 teams as No. 4/6 UC Davis hosts No. 8/7 Eastern Washington on Saturday at UC Davis Health Stadium. Ranked No. 4 in the AFCA Coaches poll, it is the Aggies' highest ranking in that poll since Sept. 16, 2019, when they also stood fourth in the nation, while the No. 6 ranking in the STATS Perform poll is the program's highest since a No. 4 ranking on Sept. 23 of that same season. UC Davis is fresh off a 40-24 victory at Northern Arizona in their 2021 road finale, scoring 26 unanswered to pull away from the Lumberjacks. Quarterback Miles Hastings finished 24-for-36 for 279 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Carson Crawford also tossed a 41-yard strike to teammate Lan Larison to give the Aggies their first lead of the day.
