Three Aggies in double figures in season finale

Webb (14), Utterback (13), and Ough (11) lead the way for UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. -- Sophomore Demari Webb shared match-high honors with 14 kills to lead a group of three UC Davis players with double-digit kills, but the host Aggies could not rebound from down two sets early, falling in their regular season finale to Cal State Fullerton by a 3-1 (27-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23) score on Saturday afternoon at the University Credit Union Center.

UC Davis completed its 2021 season with an 11-20 overall record and a 7-13 mark in Big West Conference play, out-hitting the Titans by at .248 to .232 count for the match. The Titans improved to 12-15 overall and 9-11 in league action, led by 14 kills from Haley Carmo.

Webb finished the day hitting .382 with just one error in 34 swings, finishing second on the team with 14.5 points, while freshman Olivia Utterback added 13 kills and 10 digs for the double-double. Junior Josephine Ough finished with 11 kills and eight blocks while hitting .385 on the day to collect a team-high 16 points, and freshman setter Casi Newman added a double-double of her own with 44 assists and 10 digs.

Defensively, five different Aggies tallied 10-or-more digs on the day, led by 15 from Shira Lahav and 13 more by Rachel Churilla. Freshman Megan Lenn added 10 more to round out the group.

After dropping the first two sets, UC Davis fought off five ties in the third after opening up a six-point lead early. The Aggies led 20-16 before the Titans railed off four straight points to tie things up once against at 20, but a pair of Utterback kills along with an error, gave the home side a two-point, 24-22, advantage. A service error brought Fullerton back to within a point, but Ough ended it with a kill for the 25-23 win.

The decisive fourth set featured nine more ties and three lead changes, digging out of an early four-point hole and coming back from down three points twice midway through the set to tie it up at 13 apiece. Down by four once again, kills by Webb and Utterback pulled UC Davis back to within a pair and a late run thanks to a pair of errors and a kill by Newman tied things up at 23-all.

However, kills by Gabrielle Barcelos and Marisse Turner put the Titans ahead for good, clinching the match with back-to-back points.
