DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis junior
Josephine Ough and freshman
Olivia Utterback each collected eight kills on the afternoon, but it wasn't enough to power the host Aggies past Big West Conference rival Cal Poly, as the Mustangs defeated UC Davis, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18), on Saturday at the University Credit Union Center.
The Aggies fell to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in league play with the defeat while Cal Poly, which hit .316 on the afternoon, improved to 7-10 overall and 5-1 in Big West matches.
Ough hit .375 and added a pair of blocks to her league-leading total on the day, while Utterback dug five balls and added an ace. Defensively,
Shira Lahav dug up a team-high 15 balls, while freshman
Amara Aimufua and
Lana Radakovic blocked a pair of balls at the net.
Cal Poly led wire-to-wire in the opening set, then had to hold off a UC Davis rally in the second set — one that saw six tie scores and a pair of lead changes before the Mustangs pulled away. Cal Poly then went the distance in the third, scoring the final four points of the set to clinch the match after the Aggies had made it a three-point contest at 21-18.
UC Davis closes out a run of four straight matches at home next week, welcoming CSUN on Thursday (Oct. 14) at 5 p.m., before UC Santa Barbara comes calling on Saturday (Oct. 16) at noon.
