Aggies tussle with No. 6 TCU in narrow defeat

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis locked into another tight battle against a ranked opponent this week, this time tussling with the No. 6 TCU Horned Frogs but came up just short falling 11-9 at the UC Davis Equestrian Center on Sunday.

Facing their second opponent ranked in the top-10 of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association rankings, the Aggies were a ride away from turning the tide in the second half of the meet but still walked away with three MOPs for their efforts.

Carly Sweeney led the Aggies to a Fences win with an 84 that was good for her third career Fences MOP, giving her the most career Fences MOPs in program history. Caspian Ellis also rode to an 81-80 win to give the Aggies a 2-3 start to the day.

Sarah Finkel won the Aggies' lone Horsemanship point, a wide 69.5-65.5 win that moved her to 1-0-1 in the event on the year.

UC Davis came galloping back in the Flat competition though. Sierra Gundersen scored a significant 73-40.5 win to open the second group while Keely Laughlin and Nicole Beales won points with scores of 84 and 88 respectively. It was junior Tasia Anstead who put an exclamation point on the event though. Going 10th and needing to better a 90, Anstead scored a 91 for a career-high and her first career MOP. The 4-1 event win put UC Davis right back within striking distance with only reining scores remaining.

A tightly contested Reining event went the way of TCU 3-2 though with one Horned Frogs point winning by just .5. Kendal Scheiner won 71-69.5 and Macey Newkirk finished the competition with a 69-64 win, earning her an MOP and improving to 2-0 on the season.

The Aggies will host one more home meet in 2021 when they welcome the No. 3 SMU Mustangs to campus on November 4th.
