Hawai'i steals one from the Aggies late

Devyn Simmons nets her first career goal

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis freshman Devyn Simmons scored her first career goal midway through the first half to bring her team level after falling into an early hole, but Hawai'i rallied late, scoring in the 85th minute en route to a 2-1 victory on Thursday afternoon at the Aggie Soccer Field.

The defeat moved UC Davis to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in league play, while the Rainbow Wahine improved to 2-9-3 overall and picked up their first conference win of the year in moving to 1-5-2 in the Big West Conference.

After Eliza Ammendolia scored just 3:20 into the contest, staking Hawai'i to the one-goal lead, Simmons and the Aggies answered in the 27 minute, finding herself with the ball at the her feet near the top of the 18, spinning left, and firing to the right post to tie the match.

Simmons, who posted her first collegiate point in UC Davis' win over CSUN earlier this year, became the ninth different Aggie to score a goal this year and the sixth to score their first Division I goals of their career.

Both teams continued to pepper the other side's goal, combining for 34 total shots and 15 shots on goal for the contest as both offenses were aggressive on a damp day in Davis, whistled for a combined 11 offsides.

The score remained deadlocked until the 84:11 mark when a long ball by Natalie Daub was thought to have caught Kelci Sumida offside, but no whistle was blown as the Aggies briefly let up, allowing Sumida to run into the offensive third and beat the UC Davis goalkeeper one-on-one to the right post for the eventual game winner.

Risa Yamada and Sammie Ruelas each finished with four shots on the afternoon to lead the Aggies, while Nicki Rucki finished with six stops in net.

UC Davis' regular season comes to an end on Thursday (Oct. 28), welcoming UC San Diego for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Aggie Soccer Field. The Aggies' senior class of Janessa Staab, Emma Hasco, and Nicki Rucki will be honored prior to kickoff as part of "Senior Day" festivities.
