Seniors celebrate win over Tritons in season finale

Aggies clinch first winning season -- and first 10-win campaign -- since 2015

DAVIS, Calif. -- Freshman Emma Vane scored a goal and added a pair of assists, sophomore Leslie Fregoso finished with three-points on the day, and senior Emma Hasco added a goal in her final match as an Aggie, helping send the UC Davis seniors out in style on Thursday, defeating UC San Diego by a 3-1 score at Aggie Soccer Field.

The win clinched both the first winning season and the first double-digit win season for the program since 2015 as the Aggies wrapped up the year with a 10-8 overall record and a 5-5 mark in Big West Conference play. Thursday's three goals were the most since a 4-2 win at CSUN on Sept. 26, as UC Davis won the first meeting between the former California Collegiate Athletic Association rivals.

UC San Diego finished its first season in the Big West with a 5-10-2 overall mark and a 3-5-1 record in league play.

It's only fitting that Hasco would get things started on senior day and it didn't take long for the Pennsylvania native to do so. Hasco took a pass from Vane across the top of the 18 and sent a shot from the right side into the lower left corner of the net in the 10th minute for the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Hasco's third of the year and her first since scoring against Idaho State back on Sept. 5.

The score remained that way until UCSD was able to equalize in the 29th minute as Sophia Bruno's long ball toward the net from the far left sideline took a couple bounces and eluded the Aggie defense, finding space at the right post to tie the match.

Eight minutes into the second half was all UC Davis needed to take the lead for good as Fregoso netted her seventh of the season off another assist from Vane, as the sophomore's header snuck inside the right post for the 2-1 lead in the 54th minute. Fregoso then returned the favor to Vane in the 69th minute Vane roofed a rocket in the middle of the cage for her fourth goal of the year and the final 3-1 advantage.

Vane's performance made her the third Aggie to collect four points in a match this season, joining Risa Yamada's braces against CSUN and Cal Poly, and Sammie Ruelas' two goals against Idaho State.

Meanwhile, on the defensive end, senior defender Janessa Staab and senior goalkeeper Nicki Rucki helped lead a defense that limited UC San Diego to just eight shots on the day -- five of those on frame -- while the UC Davis offense unleashed a season-high barrage of 27 shots (11 on goal). The team's previous high was 26 at Idaho State and Thursday marked the sixth time this year that the Aggies have had at least 20 in a match.
