Fregoso scores in Aggies’ loss at Riverside

UC Davis hosts Long Beach State, travels to UC Irvine next week

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Leslie Fregoso netted her fifth goal of the year to cut the UC Davis women's soccer team's deficit in half late in the second half on Sunday, but the visiting Aggies could not find the equalizer as host UC Riverside hung on for a 2-1 victory.

The defeat was the second straight for UC Davis, which fell to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in Big West play, while the Highlanders improved to 4-7-2 overall and 1-3-2 in league play.

After spotting UC Riverside a pair of goals in the 29th and 48th minutes, Fregoso's goal came at the 79:06 mark, taking a feed from teammate Alana Curtis and banging home the Aggies' only score of the match. The goal cut UC Davis' deficit in half, but the Aggies could not find the tying score as Alexa Vega had a pair of shots that missed the mark and Francesca Van Norden's attempt in the 87th minute was turned away by goalkeeper Caela Kaio to preserve the win.

Sunday's goal was the first for Fregoso since a three-point day at CSUN on Sept. 26, while Curtis logged her fourth assist of the year and her first since logging a pair against the Matadors.

The Aggies out-shot the Highlanders, 15-8, including a 7-3 advantage in the opening period, and put seven of those 15 attempts on frame. Fregoso finished with a match-high five attempts, putting four on goal while playing all 90 minutes.

UC Davis returns home to take on Long Beach State on Thursday (Oct. 14) at 4 p.m., before making its final road trip of the year, returning to Orange County for a clash with UC Irvine on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 5 p.m.
