IRVINE, Calif. – The Big West Conference announced on Friday its return to play and scheduling protocols for spring sports. All league institutions will continue to adhere to medical and COVID-19 testing protocols based on CDC, NCAA, federal, state, local and conference guidelines.
Baseball competition will consist of a four-game weekend series against BWC opponents; teams may schedule non-conference games until league play begins on March 19. From that point until the end of the season (May 29), midweek matchups are not allowed and teams will face only one opponent each week.
Softball will participate in a three-game series during league play with an option to add a fourth game, designated as a non-conference event, if desired by both teams. As is the case with Big West baseball, softball teams can face only one team per week during the conference season (March 19-May 15) and are not allowed to compete in any midweek contests.
Big West women's water polo teams will face each other once during the conference season and have an option of adding a second designated non-conference game. League competition will run from March 12 through April 25; if agreed upon by both teams, the designated BWC match can take place earlier in the season, which turns the second head-to-head clash into a non-conference meeting.
The Big West Women's Water Polo Championship is slated for April 30-May 2.
League officials are planning conference championships involving UC Davis' other Big West spring programs — men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track and field and women's beach volleyball — for late spring.
