Duggins, Chels to be honored during CAAHOF inductions

Emmy-winning stunt performer and coordinator competed for Aggie gymnastics in the 1990s

DAVIS, Calif. -- Former UC Davis gymnast and award-winning TV/film stunt performer Shauna Duggins will receive the Aggie Legacy Award, betstowed upon a past Aggie student-athlete who has since enjoyed an outstanding sports-related career since departing the university. Additionally, Casey and Jennifer Chel will be honored with the Special Recognition Award for meritorious volunteer service to the intercollegiate athletics department.

Both awards will be presented as part of the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony, held this year on Friday, September 4.

Duggins made television history by becoming the first woman to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or Variety Program thanks to her work on the Netflix series GLOW. She was previously nominated for a similar award on the ABC drama Alias in 2006. Duggins has also earned nominations for five World Stunt Awards, with two wins for Charlie's Angels (2001) and one for Fast Five (2012). She added a Screen Actors Guild Award for GLOW in 2019 for Best Stunt Ensemble.

Duggins was a member of UC Davis' first Division I gymnastics team under coaches Ray Goldbar and Perry Siu, earning NACGC/W All-Academic honors before graduating from the university with a degree in sociology in 1996. Like Aggie gymnastics standout Yuri Hinson before her, Duggins put her acrobatic skills to work after college as a stunt performer. The ABC action series Alias served as one of her first television hits but also introduced her to actor Jennifer Garner, for whom she has doubled in seven other projects. The 2000 hit Charlie's Angels propelled her even further in the industry, and earned her Taurus nods for Best Aerial Work and Best Speciality Stunt. To date, she has more than 125 film and television credits as a performer.

Duggins has since advanced from stunt performer to stunt coordinator, overseeing her fellow performers in dozens of projects, including TV series Brothers & Sisters, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Ray Donovan and GLOW. It was that last series, a sports comedy starring Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin as professional wrestlers, that landed her the Emmy award. Duggins has since taken over the director's chair, with her debut Guardian currently in pre-production.

Duggins becomes the ninth recipient of the honor, joining coach Chris Petersen (football), triathlete Dave Scott (swimming, water polo), NFL player/humanitarian Rolf Benirschke (football, soccer), coach Dante Dettamanti (water polo, swimming), coach Paul Hackett (football), MMA fighter Urijah Faber (wrestling), coach Mike Bellotti (football) and Arena Football League player Mark Grieb (football).

The Chels became involved with UC Davis Athletics even before Casey moved to the area from Southern California in 2011. They were season ticket holders who volunteered at home games while in town. Furthermore, Casey helped upgrade the then newly acquired Aggie Pack Fire Engine, including his installation of a 12-volt outlet for charging phones. After moving north, he began serving as the scoreboard operator at Aggie baseball games.

Since that time, Casey has served on the game staffs for football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse and volleyball. His work has ranged from serving as timekeeper to scoreboard operator, but this season, he replaced fellow Special Recognition Award winner Skip Harrison as the primary official scorer at UC Davis women's basketball home games.

Jennifer, a UC Davis graduate in animal science, continues to volunteer at pregame events and has more recently begun operating the scoreboard at home softball games. She also joined the Aggie Guest Services team, launched in 2019. Both Jennifer and Casey volunteer at special events whenever needed, while Jennifer has even served as a proofreader for department publications.

The Chels become the second husband-and-wife tandem to receive the Special Recognition Award in its 26-year history, joining Skip and Janet Harrison, who claimed the honor in 2004.

Duggins and the Chels will receive their respective awards as part of the same ceremony in which water polo player Carmen Eggert, golfer Matt Hansen, gymnast Michelle Kulovitz Alencar, golfer Demi Runas, and distance runner Sarah Sumpter will be inducted into the CAAHOF.
