Mountaineers spoil late Aggie comeback in first half of rain filled double-header

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis Aggies put together a furious comeback, scoring five runs over the eighth and ninth innings, but the late-game rally came up short and they fell 8-5 to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers Saturday.

Sophomore Jake Spillane (2-2) got the ball to start for UC Davis (8-6) and took the loss. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.

In the batter's box, the Aggies were paced by junior mechanical engineering major Spencer Gedestad, who went 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles and two RBIs. Freshman applied physics major Mike Campagna put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs. Senior managerial economics major Logan Denholm also helped out for UC Davis, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, two walks and an RBI.

The Aggies were trailing 6-0 in the eighth inning when they first put runs on the board. UC Davis got an RBI single from Campagna, scoring Gedestad from third base.

The Mountaineers expanded their lead to 8-1 before the Aggies offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the ninth. The UC Davis offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Gedestad, which brought the score to 8-5 in favor of the Mountaineers. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
