DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior catcher Riley Siegel launched a solo homer in the seventh and freshman Taylor Fitzgerald provided 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, but Hornet rallies in the second and fifth led to UC Davis falling to Sacramento State, 4-1, in a non-conference collegiate softball game Tuesday afternoon at La Rue Field.
The Aggies fall to 12-10 for the year. The Hornets improve to 13-8.Â
Siegel launched a 2-1 pitch to left to lead off the seventh. She had one of UC Davis' five hits in the contest, along with Alyse Rojas, Maddie Rojas, Marisa Given and Sommer Kisling. Freshman Kenedi Brown started the game for the Aggies, surrendering just two unearned runs before Lewa Day's homer off the top of the right-center fence extended the Sacramento State lead to 4-0.
Fitzgerald came in after Hornet designated player Mo Spieth reached on a double, then proceeded to retire seven straight into the seventh.
Siegel's leadoff homer in the seventh started a brief rally for UC Davis. Kisling singled on the next at-bat, pinch hitter Gabby Zagone walked to move Kisling into scoring position. However, Hornet freshman Marissa Bertuccio coaxed back-to-back pop-ups to end the Aggie threat.
UC Davis returns to action this weekend at Fresno State's Bulldog Classic. The Aggies open the tourney with Friday games against East Carolina (9 a.m.) and BYU (11:30 a.m.).
