Davis, Calif. - Following a marathon 24-inning walk-off win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday, UC Davis dropped both games of a double-header to Loyola Marymount on Sunday.Â
The Aggies fell to the Lions 12-3 in the 11 a.m. game despite the efforts of freshman applied physics major Mike Campagna, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Sophomore Jake Spillane (2-1) got the ball to start for UC Davis (7-4) and took the loss.
Junior communication major Alejandro Lara provided a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman political science major Jake Brandel also contributed, going 1-for-2 for UC Davis with an RBI.
The Aggies were trailing 8-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. UC Davis put up a three spot, the big hit coming by way of a run-scoring double off the bat of Campagna.
The Aggies took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning of the second game, but could not hang on and fell 10-6.Â
Sophomore political science major Ryan Rodriguez (0-1) came out of the bullpen for UC Davis (7-5) and took the loss. Sophomore Nolan Meredith was a bright spot for the Aggies, starting the ballgame and throwing five innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on three hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.
At the plate, the Aggies were led Lara, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Jalen Smith furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Junior managerial economics major Jackson O'Boy also contributed for UC Davis, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
The Aggies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring in the first inning. Smith came across to score the lone run of the inning for UC Davis and get them on the board.
The Lions failed to push any runs across before the Aggies built on their lead in the third inning. UC Davis scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Smith, which brought the Aggies lead to 2-0.
UC Davis' lead had evaporated once the sixth inning arrived and turned into a 3-2 Loyola Marymount (CA) advantage, when the Aggies re-took control at 5-3.
UC Davis lost the lead they built in the sixth, but got back on the board in the eighth trailing 10-5. The Aggies sent home a run on Lara's leadoff homer off Harry Hibberd, tightening the Loyola Marymount (CA) lead to 10-6. The Aggies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
