Aggies finish opening weekend on winning note

Leon hits .529/.600/1.176 with 10 RBIs during NorCal Kickoff

DAVIS, Calif. -- Catcher Riley Siegel, right fielder Marisa Given and shortstop Isabella Leon each rapped out RBI hits, freshman Taylor Fitzgerald picked up her first collegiate win, and senior Katie Kibby notched her first career save, as UC Davis beat Idaho State, 5-2, in Sunday's finale to close out its own season-opening NorCal Kickoff softball tournament with a 4-1 overall record.

Given and Leon each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman third baseman Leah Polson went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Siegel had two RBIs on her lone hit, a single in the first inning to lift the Aggies to a 2-0 start.

Fitzgerald went 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, one unearned run and no walks with two strikeouts for her first Aggie victory. She allowed the leadoff runner in the sixth, but Kibby came in to retire the side in order. Kibby then put up a scoreless seventh to close out her first save.

After UC Davis took the initial 2-0 lead, ISU rallied to equlalize in the third. Sydney Stefani scored on a rundown during a steal attempt, then fellow outfielder Isabel Cargill came home on a throwing error later in the frame. The Bengals threatened to take a lead on the next batter, but Aggie left fielder Gabby Zagone gunned down Morgan Hess at the plate to end the inning.

The Aggies reclaimed the lead in the fourth on back-to-back RBI singles by Given and Leon. Meanwhile, Fitzgerald retired six straight to get to the sixth before yielding a Cargill single to lead off the sixth. Kibby retired the next three batters to strand Cargill.

In the bottom of the sixth, UC Davis stretched its lead to three when Polson scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by ISU freshman Emma McMurray. With two in scoring position, Leon ripped a hard liner down the third-base stripe for an apparent two-run hit. However, Jayden DeMoss made a spectacular catch on Leon's shot, then doubled up Rojas on a diving race for the bag.

UC Davis finished 4-1 at its own tournament, hitting .371 with a .573 slugging average as a team during the weekend. Polson went 7-for-13 in her first collegiate weekend, while Leon powered the Aggies to 9-for-17 (.529) hitting, two doubles, three homers and 10 RBIs in the five games.
