Rojas' bat forges split on first day in Lake Elsinore

Alyse Rojas hits 7-for-8 with seven runs and three XBH

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. -- Junior Alyse Rojas hit a combined 7-for-8 with seven runs, including the game-winner on a walk-off sacrifice fly from her older sister, senior first baseman Maddie Rojas, as UC Davis split its first day of action at the Golden State Classic softball tournament at Rosetta Canyon Park Friday. The Aggies lost to Bradley, 6-3, in their morning contest; then nipped Loyola Marymount by a 12-11 in the bottom of the seventh.

UC Davis moves to 5-2 for the year.

Alyse Rojas hit 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers and all three runs in the Aggies' loss to the Braves in the morning. She then added another 4-for-4 in the nightcap win over the Lions, including the bunt single that helped UC Davis put two in scoring position with no outs in the seventh.

UC Davis totaled four homers on the day. In addition to the younger Rojas sister's output against Bradley, center fielder Marisa Given delivered a two-run shot to open the nightcap win, while catcher Riley Siegel launched a grand slam in the fifth against LMU.

Four total Aggies had multiple hits for the day: Alyse Rojas' seven, shortstop Isabella Leon's combined 4-for-8, Given's 3-for-7 and Siegel's 2-for-5 total.

UC Davis continues action at the Golden State Classic on Friday with games against Utah State (2 p.m.) and Portland State (4:30 p.m.).

BRADLEY 6, UC DAVIS 3
Alyse Rojas' solo home runs in the first and fifth helped UC Davis craft a 3-1 lead, but Bradley answered with five unanswered in the fifth and sixth to pull away to the victory. Rojas also accounted for the Aggies' second run of the game, rapping a one-out single to left, stealing second, then coming home on Given's RBI single.

BU senior Kealia Wysocki tied the game with her two-run single in the fifth, then a two-run blast from junior third baseman Vicki Zaluske highlighted a three-run sixth for the Braves.

Freshman Kenedi Brown allowed just three hits and an earned run in four complete innings in the circle for UC Davis.

UC DAVIS 12, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 11
Alyse Rojas added another 4-for-4 with a triple and a stolen base, while Given, Leon and Siegel each had two hits in a game that featured two ties and four lead changes.

Given's homer boosted UC Davis to a 2-0 start in the first inning, only to have LMU second baseman Andrea Gonzalez launch a three-run shot in the next half inning. The Aggies reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the second, capitalizing on a key error for a 4-3 lead. Still, the Lions answered with an unearned run of their own in the top of the third.

UC Davis put up two more in the bottom of the third, with a Marissa Jauregui double and an RBI single from freshman third baseman Leah Polson highlighting the frame.

LMU tacked on five runs in its fifth, thanks in large part to home runs from Molly Grumbo, Desiree Moreno and Megan Dedrick. That lead proved short-lived: a Siegel grand slam plated Maddie Rojas, Leon and Given, restoring the UC Davis advantage at 11-9.

A pair of RBI singles evened the game at 11-11 in the top of the sixth, while UC Davis went down in order in the bottom half. Aggie reliever Taliyah Miles held the Lions to a scoreless seventh, setting up the Aggies for the walk-off heroics. Alyse Rojas and Given started with back-to-back bunt singles, then moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Maddie Rojas lifted a fly to center fielder Morgan DeBord, deep enough to bring in her sister for the victory.

Miles earned the win in relief, her first as an Aggie after redshirting the 2019 season.
