DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior midfielder Mar Alvear won nine of her team's 20 draw controls and finished as one of four Aggies to net two goals, but visiting Arizona State connected on 64 percent of its shots as UC Davis fell, 16-12, in its women's collegiate lacrosse season opener Saturday at UC Davis Health Stadium.
The Aggies open at 0-1 for the year. The Sun Devils move to 1-0.
Alvear and seniors Maddie Myers, Sorana Larson and Kate Graham each had two goals, with Larson supplying two assists for four total points. Another senior, Addie Dearden, led the UC Davis defense with three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.
However, Arizona State never trailed in the contest, with fifth-year Kerri Clayton's four goals and two assists leading a trio of hat tricks. The Sun Devils broke open to a 2-0 start in the first two minutes, then saw the Aggies equalize to 3-3 as Myers scored two eight-meter goals and assisted Kendal Seifert along the left side of the crease in the 13th minute.
ASU responded with four goals from four different players across the next 3:10 in claiming a 7-3 advantage, eventually holding an 8-5 edge at the halftime break.
UC Davis cut the deficit to two goals on three different occasions in the second half: on freshman Mia Lawrence's goal after a busted clear attempt in the 32nd minute (8-6), on an Alvear eight-meter conversion in the 40th (9-7), and on a Graham drive in the 41st (10-8). However, the Aggies never closed the gap any further, with the Sun Devils eventually restoring their lead by as much as 16-10 with 4:13 left.
UC Davis dominated on the draw by a 20-10 margin, held a slight edge in shooting (26-25) and even managed to break up five of ASU's 24 transition attempts. The Aggies also scored half of their goals on free positions, shooting 6-for-13 overall from the eight-meter arc. On the other hand, the Sun Devils ultimately proved more efficient in their possessions with a 16-for-25 shooting day.
The Aggies remain at home for another Pac-12 Conference-member opponent, facing California on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. at UC Davis Health Stadium.
