DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior Isabella Leon, junior Riley Siegel, senior Maddie Rojas and freshman Leah Polson each homered while senior Katie Kibby went the distance in the pitching circle, leading UC Davis to an 11-3, five-inning win over Santa Clara in the final game of Saturday action at the NorCal Kickoff softball tournament at La Rue Field.
The Aggies improve to 3-1 for the year.
Leon and Siegel delivered two-runs blasts in the third inning to break up a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 UC Davis lead. Rojas had a solo shot to right during the fifth to give the Aggies a 7-3 edge, then Polson launched a three-run blast for her first collegiate home run extend that margin to 10-3.Â
All nine position players had at least one hit for UC Davis, with Leon, Siegel, Polson, second baseman Sommer Kisling, first baseman Maddie Rojas and left fielder Alyse Rojas coming up with two apiece. Each Aggie scored at least one, including Leon and Alyse Rojas with two each. The younger Rojas trotted in for the fifth run of that fifth frame thanks to a Megan Bower walk, putting the eight-run rule into effect.
Kibby scattered seven hits and walked two on just 78 pitches in her five innings of work. Two of her runs allowed came on a bunt single in the first inning, while SCU added its third run on an Ashley Trierweiler RBI double in the fourth.
Saturday's matchup also represented a reunion for the UC Davis coaching staff: Bronco mentor Gina Carbonatto served with the Aggies for the previous three seasons before earning her first head coaching position in Silicon Valley last June.
The NorCal Kickoff tournament concludes with two games on Sunday. UC Davis will face Idaho State in the second contest, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Complete coverage of the tourney is available at https://ucdavisaggies.com/sports/2020/1/29/sports-w-softbl-spec-rel-2020-norcal-kickoff.aspx.
