DAVIS, Calif. -- Senior
Cammi Johnson won the individual vault outright and tied for the meet title with the program's highest all-around debut in history, leading UC Davis to a winning team score of 194.600 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dual meet Friday night at the Pavilion. Visiting San Jose State finished with a 193.525 total.
This represents the second head-to-head win over the Spartans in as many weeks, as the Aggies had previously claimed a 194.925-192.575 victory at the Event Center one week earlier.
Johnson amassed a four-event sum of 39.225 to tie SJSU's Taylor Chan for the all-around win. She is only the second UC Davis gymnast ever to break the 39-point barrier in her first attempt, joining teammate
Gabby Landess, who performed the feat two years ago. Johnson's 9.825 on vault beat the field by a .050 margin, while her 9.775 on bars was good for second place. She added a 9.800 on beam then made her collegiate debut on floor -- her first meet performance since her junior year of high school -- with a 9.825, good for third place.
Other highlights included freshman
Rachel Schuelke, who led off the beam rotation with a career-high 9.850. She tied teammate
Alyssa Ito for third in the meet. Sophomore
Cortney Cunningham also placed third on both vault (9.750) and bars (9.750).Â
Overall, UC Davis opened with a 48.725 on vault, added a 48.100 on bars, then enjoyed scores of 48.875 on beam and 48.900 in the second half of the meet. San Jose State also finished on a strong note with a 49.175 on beam, with Jada Mazury and Chelsey Andrada sharing the individual title with matching 9.875 scores.
Besides Johnson's debut, the Aggie floor squad saw freshman
Logan Clagg and junior
Gabby Landess each notch 9.800 scores.Â
UC Davis begins a run of four straight road meets, starting with a MPSF dual at the Air Force Academy on February 15.
