Aggies sweep double header on Arenado's walk-off

Davis, Calif. - UC Davis won on both ends of Saturday's double-header against North Dakota State, winning 3-2 in the opener and walking off with another 3-2 win on a Kyler Arenado single to take the series 3-1. 

Thanks in part to a great outing on the mound from sophomore Jake Spillane, the UC Davis Aggies brought home a 3-2 win against the North Dakota State Bison on in their first game Saturday.

The quality outing from Spillane (2-0) earned him the victory on the mound for UC Davis (4-3). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out seven. Junior human development major Nick Johnson also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking none and striking out three.

Junior communication major Alejandro Lara led the way offensively for the Aggies, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Jalen Smith put together a noteworthy effort as well, going 2-for-4. Freshman wildlife, fish, and conservation biology major Jonah Henrickson also chipped in, going 1-for-3 for UC Davis with an RBI.

The Aggies got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. UC Davis pushed across two runs in the frame, the big blow coming on an RBI double from Lara.

After the Bison rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Aggies came back to re-take the lead in the sixth inning. UC Davis scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior biomedical engineering major Kyler Arenado, which brought the Aggies lead to 3-2. The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game, as UC Davis held on for the win.

In the second game, the Aggies rallied to score one in the ninth inning and walked it off on a single off the bat of Arenado to pick up the 3-2 win.

Freshman computer science and engineering major Kai Janowicz (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UC Davis (5-3). The right-hander went one shutout inning while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out two. Freshman managerial economics major Zach Carrell also made an impact on the mound for the Aggies, throwing 3.1 shutout innings while allowing two hits, with no walks and four strikeouts.

Junior design major Tanner Murray led the way offensively for the Aggies, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. 

The Aggies were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Murray came across to score the lone run of the inning for UC Davis and get them on the board.

The Bison then scored one run to re-take their advantage heading into the eighth inning, when the Aggies responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. UC Davis picked up a run on Murray's one-out solo home run off of Evan Sankey, which evened the score at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when UC Davis walked it off on an RBI single off the bat of Arenado.
