Davis, Calif. - The UC Davis Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 6-5 win over the Utah Utes on Sunday.
Sophomore Jake Spillane (1-0) got the win for UC Davis (2-1). The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out five. Freshman Nate Freeman also pitched well, going 1.1 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two.
Offensively, the Aggies were led by junior Tanner Murray, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a triple and three RBIs. Senior Cooper Morrison compiled a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Sophomore Jalen Smith also contributed for UC Davis, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
The Aggies got on the board immediately, starting their scoring in the first inning. UC Davis managed to push across two runs in the inning.
The Aggies then held the Utes scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. UC Davis scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run triple from Murray, which brought the Aggies lead to 5-0.
UC Davis held Utah scoreless before building their lead to 6-0 the following inning. The Aggies notched a run on Smith's two-out RBI double. Utah put five runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but UC Davis still held on for the 6-5 win.
